The New Adventures of Paul Bunyan
Pastels 1994, 1995

The legend of Paul Bunyan was an oral tradition, a bunkhouse pastime. He began in Maine, moved to Minnesota, and ended up in the Pacific Northwest. It was only in those latter years, around 1930, that the stories were written down. Click here to continue...

Description Continued

The old adventures of Paul Bunyan are a legacy of the industrial revolution. Men still used hand tools to take down the giant firs and cedars, but the logs were going to a sawmill. Paul was an inventor and tinkerer, always trying to figure a way to speed up the process.

It was high time for old Paul to be updated for the 21st century! The big timber is gone, the salmon fisheries wiped out, the sliver and gold dug up. In the light of ecology and environmental awareness we realize how much destruction Paul did along the way.

Paul was an exploiter of the public domain. He must expand his consciousness to gain a larger perspective. To this end he experiences various ethnic incarnations and encounters a cast of characters from other myths and spiritual traditions: the Devil, Buddha, Jesus, Thor, as well as JAWS and Yosemite Sam.
