The theater paintings
at The Washington Center are more nostalgic in tone. "I had done
a little watercolor of the Capitol Theater, " Lindenmeyer said. "Then
I was downtown and heard some noise and they were starting to tear the
marquee off. So my painting became a historic painting."
The artist created
some new work just for the show at the center, which has been extremely
popular, said Kevin Boyer, marketing director and curator of the gallery.
"Several patrons,
including our current board president, have told me it has been their
favorite show I have ever done here, " said Boyer, who's been curating
the gallery for nine years.
"He paints in
a way that is fresh, kind of like craft work, and his use of color and
line is different, " Boyer said. "It's a wonderful show, highly
edited, historical, artistic and artful." View his artwork
But Lindenmeyer, who
also works in pastels, watercolors and other media, is fascinated by the
lighter side of life, too - even the neon-lit side.
While he incorporates
found paper into some of his paintings, too, it's the unusual and dangerous
found objects that fascinate him most.
What: Michael Lindenmeyer's
collages incorporate found objects from bullet shells and tire blowouts
to stuffed toys and photos from magazines. His art will be exhibited along
with photographs by Dan Meuse.
Where: Minnaert Center
for the Arts at South Puget Sound Community College, 2011 Mottman Road,
Olympia
When: Opening reception
is from 6 to 8 p.m. today; exhibit will be on display through Nov. 30.
Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
'Marquee Magic'
What: Lindenmeyer's
pastels and other paintings explore his fascination with the grand, neon-lit
theaters of the past.
Where: The Washington
Center for the Performing Arts, 512 Washington St. S.E., Olympia
When: Through Nov.
23. Gallery hours are 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays and by appointment.
