Biography
M.
W. LINDENMEYER
Michael
Lindenmeyer is a self taught artist from the Northwest. He was born
in Portland, Oregon in 1950 and grew up along the banks of the Columbia
River. He began painting seriously in 1977 in the medium of watercolor.
One year later he began showing his art and selling.
Michael
is fascinated by the built environment: old buildings, city scape,
railroads and industrial artifacts. He strongly believes in the
power of art to document, investigate and perhaps reveal new truths
or ideas about the way we live. Always, there is a strong dose of
humor in the art, and usually quite a bit of story telling.
Michael
has traveled the length of the West Coast many times with pencil
and sketchbook gathering raw material on location for creating more
finished works in the studio. He added several media to his repertoire;
wax crayon, silkscreen, oil pastel and regular pastel. He continued
to show with numerous Portland solo gallery exhibits from 1983 to
1997 selling paintings to various prominent local business owners.
His works are also exhibited in public collections. The Washington
State Arts Commission acquired several pieces that now reside in
schools and Michael's work is part of the City of Portland's "Visual
Chronicle Collection."
By
the mid 1990's Michael was probing deeper into the conjunction of
art and legend, spending two years on the series: The New Adventures
of Paul Bunyan, reinterpreting the early industrial myth for the
multi ethnic digital era. At this time he was also inspired to work
with various archetypes including Mermaid and Clown. These can also
be viewed on this website.
After
1997 he discontinued gallery shows to focus intensely on the creative
process and reevaluate his professional goals. In lieu of showing,
this web site was created.
From
2001 to 2005, Michael took time off from painting pictures and worked
on three series of conceptual/assembly art. Samples of these can
be seen here on the website under "Outlaw Art."
For
nearly 30 years he has been telling our stories in a variety of
media, free from established art expectations. The paintings are
full of life, fun and engaging, lending a breath of fresh air to
the viewer's experience.
