Birdland

These visions of birds in the post-industrial landscape have allowed me to create some expansiveness, a contrast with my many cityscapes. Typically in these pastels, the first generation of industrial debris is dead and weathering picturesquely. While the second or third generation industries are sometimes smoking away as the work goes on, we no longer see them as signs of progress and pride but rather more of a necessary evil. However, the birds don’t care either way. They are opportunists; for instance, the ospreys often build nests on steel cranes or electric towers. I find this to be a signal of hopefulness, that given the chance nature can heal the wounds, and life goes on regardless.
